(Week #4 in Unlimited Access Series)
Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Matthew 6:9-10
Prayer as mission is not just praying for whatever we feel like praying for. It’s praying for God’s will and purposes to get done in the here and now.
This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.
1 John 5:14-15
ASKING GOD IS…
Petition: asking God for something on your own behalf
Intercession: asking God for something on behalf of others
If we truly love people, we will desire for them far more than it is within our power to give them, and this will lead us to prayer. Intercession is a way to love others.[Richard Foster]
Asking is the rule of the kingdom.[C.H. Spurgeon]
We’re invited to pray, because prayer actually makes things happen.
PRAYERING ACCORDING TO GOD’S WILL:
Know his purposes
Rely on his power
Trust his promises
PARTNER WITH GOD IN PRAYER:
In the ongoing work of the kingdom, nothing is more important than intercessory prayer.[Richard Foster]
The church, when it’s true to its real calling, when it is on about what God is on about, is by and far the most potent force for transformational change the world has ever seen.[Alan Hirsch]
I love this last quote and the book it's found in. It reflects so well the true DNA of the church, and true sense of what it means to be on mission with God and partnering with him, what the impact of the church as God's living and local presence might be like.
