I often invite people to volunteer - whether it's through the church I pastor or the cafe I lead. I also try my best to give at least 5 -10 hours above a regular work week since any one who volunteers is giving time above their work week. This could be set-up on Sunday, serving the community on Sat. AM, hosting a small group, hosting a dinner to help people connect, a musical practice on any given night, etc.
I was recently invited to join the board of a non-profit organization serving the poor in the West Island. I thought about it lots and decided to do it. Here's why?
1. I want my life to be available to serve my community, not just b/c I'm a pastor.
2. I hope to follow the call of Jesus to be God's living and local presence in my world.
3. I think I will learn more about the needs of my community.
4. I am forced to serve not to benefit something I'm directly leading.
5. I think the experience of being on a leadership team that I'm not leading will teach me a whole lot about teams, boards, and sitting in the other seat.
6. There's lots of hungry and needy people in the West Island that need help and my church is only a small part of the solution.
Thoughts?
