2006 reading and brief reviews

Books read in 2006:

Jesus Creed **** (Scot McKnight)
I was introduced to this ordinary and yet smart scholar in 2006. McKnight writes profound without the dense cloud of stuffiness. The Jesus Creed explores Jesus' summary statement of the Scriptures - Love God, Love Others (paraphrased) - and looks at how this statement is developed and practiced in the teachings & life of Jesus as well and his apostles.

Embracing Grace **** (Scot McKnight)
If you're looking to better understand the true concept of the Gospel - meaning, intent, result - read this book. McKnight makes it understandable with room for dialogue. I'll be using it to help our leaders grow in their understanding of the gospel this year.

Velvit Elvis ***1/2 (Rob Bell)
Stretches your thinking, provokes some questions, wets your appetite to learn from Jesus and live for him.

Eat this Book (Eugene Peterson) ***** my favorite!
This is a must read if you're interested in how scripture shapes you or if you question the potential of it shaping you. Peterson gives you passion for scripture but also perspective on how to read it (not a formula, but a lense). The best insight was the idea of metaphor. Metaphor by nature is not literal, but the scriptures are full of them. The best metaphor in the book was Eating, i.e. if scripture is going to shape you and really transform Christ followers it must be eaten - absorbed, chewed, digested, metabolized.
Read it in 2007 if you haven't yet.
