BBQ in the rain!!

Our church planned a Community BBQ for our neighborhood... and it rained! In our planning we opted for an indoor plan B rather then a rain date, not knowing if an indoor BBQ would actually work. So we went with it... set everything up, thinking 1-2 people would show - would you attend a BBQ in your community if it rained? To our surprize about 100 from the community poped in and hung around. It was lots of fun, the live bands were great, the kids areas were creative, and we got a chance to meet a bunch of people. I was personally thrilled to see 15 of my neighbors and friends from soccer show up.
The point of the day was to be a contribution to our community in bringing people who might live on the same street or neighborhood together in order to foster relationships in an often isolated* world. Offering everything free was a picture of God's grace and kindness. A side result was meeting people we might never come into contact with.

Our volunteers did amazing... so dedicated, not quitting despite the rain... keeping positive through out.

You can check out the pics here.

* A trend toward isolation surfaced in the last U.S. census figures, showing that one-fourth of the nation's households--27.2 million of them--consisted of just one person, compared with 10 percent in 1950.
In June 2006, an authoritative study in the American Sociological Review found that the average American had only two close friends in whom they would confide on important matters, down from an average of three in 1985. The number of people who said they had no such confidant soared from 10 percent in 1985 to nearly 25 percent in 2004; an additional 19 percent said they had only one confidant--often their spouse.

The tiny stats at the bottom are American (bla, I know we're different up north), but I happened to see this the day of the post. I think it suggests similar cultural trends, although a sifferent %, in Canada.

Looked like a lot of fun. Good turnout and great activities. Always encouraging and spirit lifting when you see your neighbours come through the door.
Hannah saw the pictures - said "Mommy, I wanna go there!"
