I love Peterson's definition of the church here:
"Church is the textured context in which we grow up in Christ to maturity."
This strikes a chord for me this week as my church just reflected last week-end on what it means to Speak the Truth in Love to one another in community. The purpose of speaking truth in love to one another is maturity.
I love Peterson's affirmation that part of what it means to be part of the church is to be involved participants in a community that will shape you into the kind of person God designed you to be.
I love my church, not just b/c they are a great bunch of people and we get to do mission together, but b/c they shape me and remind me and support me in my process towards maturity.

thanks david... sounds like a book worth reading.

hey lewis, this is the fifth in a series... all pretty good books - my favorite is EAST THIS BOOK, and then JESUS WAY; I haven't read Tell is Slant or this one yet. But worth checking them out.
Eat this book is one of the best books I've read about reading the bible - both ingesting it and digesting it.
Hey David,
Just got this book and am only a bit past the introduction. I have read the other 4 in the series and just finished reading "Eat This Book" for a second time. It seems by book 5 he is really fed up. Like "You are not getting it"! I think Peterson is an exceptional writer and thinking and the church as a whole would be better off if they read and practiced what he is trying to say. These books have done a lot in my life. By the way, do yourself a favor and buy "Tell It Slant". It's fantastic.
Much love Dave.
thanks for the post Phil... Reading McKnight's posts tell me that Peterson keeps harping on the same message through the years - an important message - we need to listen to - mainly that the church should be primarily corporate or success driven but true to it's nature and purpose (though we need organization and hopes to grow).
I will have to reread Eat This Book... but will eventually get Tell is Slant.
Hope all is well with you down south - how's Georgia as a place to live?
