I was surprised this morning.
Westside is doing church @ home this month - as way to give our leaders/volunteers a break, and a way to help everyone in our community experience community in a more simple way (also a great opportunity to bring friends)
My wife and I opened up our home last minute b/c we felt there were some that didn't sign up to other homes that we're open, or just were available for this week, and needed a place to connect.
To our surprise we had a full living room, including a family who showed up at our regular location, read the sign, and came to our house. In fact, a cool thing about our group was the diversity - split 1/2 way b/w people who've been part of Westside for a few years, and some just in 2009.
The theme? To live b/w the trees - the tree in the garden of Eden (creation), and the tree in Revelation (new creation) - an analogy that our lives matter today - and that our faith in Christ is not just about eternity, but about how we live today, now, here.
Some prayers that came out of our discussion:
- work for someone presently laid off
- one girl off to Cuba for the week-end hoping to serve as much as possible
- a family on a mission trip next week in Montreal
- a desire for our church to grow from a tree to a forest - so the fruit of our mission growing in ways we haven't seen
- for many at Westside on vacation, traveling
A few things I hope for with church@home is...
- people inviting friends that aren't connected to church or God yet
- people trying the simpler environment
- people building relationships
- people leaving knowing how they will live differently this week
