HEARING GOD

(took some time away from blogging for a few weeks)

This week I'll be sharing some thoughts and ideas about hearing God. I don't share as a pro but a student, hoping to learn from my reflection and some responses.

Yesterday I started teaching a 3 week series: living IN RESPONSE to someone greater. We're basing ourselves in the story of a crazy prophet called Elijah found in 1 Kings 17-19. Over the 3 weeks we'll focusing on HEARING, TRUSTING, and RESPONDING - all key elements if you want to live 2009 in response to God (the someone greater).

I'll kick off things in another post but for now...

Do you struggle to hear God? Why?
How do you best hear God?
When you read, 'hearing God,' does that sound weird or foreign?
Is there real life examples you have about what it means to 'pay attention' to the important people in your life?

Hi David!

I love the title of the series. As I went through the questions you posted, I think another one that I personally struggle with is waiting for God to talk. Maybe I'm used to getting most of the things quickly (the "microwave" culture I live in), but God will talk in the time he wants to talk.

It does not mean that God does not talk (to me) about OTHER stuff. What I mean is that sometimes I want to hear God about "ABC" but instead he talks to me about "XYZ". And it's tricky to realize that God may want to have "ABC" on hold.. and wants my attention on "XYZ" for whatever reasons he considers better.

Anyways! I hope I made sense.

You hit something important. We are probably looking for God to tell us about something on our agenda, where if we're open, we'll get a chance to hear what's on his agenda.

Waiting. That's tough, there's no easy answers (not that you were looking for them). I don't promote a monastic life, but there's something to learned from them - their uninterrupted time in prayer and worship is worthy incorporating to some degree into our schedules.
