My last post was about being the church, more specifically a caring church that stretches, supports, and serves.
What are some ways that can happen on a Sunday?
(Let's be clear, we aren't being the church if it's only on a Sunday gathering, but here's a starting place for when we gather)
1. be a connector
- who's in the room that looks like they need to connect, make a next step, meet some people
2. be a host
- keep you eye out for someone in need of something, be helpful
- is there a new family that needs to know where KidsQuest is
- is there someone who looks like they need a coffee
- did a guest miss out on the compass, get them a copy
3. be a support
- if you see someone's been touched deeply by a message or a moment in the gathering, why not ask them how they're doing, or what's impacted them today, or what about asking them if they need some prayer
4. stretch yourself to say to someone you don't know
- even in our smaller community there's often someone new that needs a 'hello'
- walk across the room and say hi
- see if they would like someone to sit near them
- get to know them a little, and make yourself known
- what if God might use you to 'be the church' to them that day
5. serve
- does one of our teams need a hand (set-up with chairs; the coffee pot cleaned; the sound wires rolled up)
- join a regular Sunday team to contribute to creating an environment where everyone can experience God more regularly; serving helps your grow; and serving helps stretch the volunteer rotation, so you're serving our volunteers
(check out the opportunities here or here)
6. show up
- seriously, you can do none of the above at home
- relationships are built in cumulative deposits of time and conversation
- you can't go deeper if you don't scratch the initial surface
- you'll never have someone over for coffee whom you never met
- you won't be able to talk a message or experience you never had
Any other ideas? Please, post some comments.
