I've been thinking a little lately on a similar stream. Small is not the new authentic. We're a smaller church, and I don't see that as defining us as authentic. I constantly challenge our community (or at least try to) towards transformation, community, and mission. Towards being God's living and local presence in the world. Towards being a worshiping and witnessing community. My hopes is not that we become "BIG" but full participants with God's mission in the world. As long as we're becoming a SENT COMMUNITY (b/c God sent us into the world), that is success for us.
When that doesn't happen (and I want it to happen more) then regardless of size, we're not what/who we're suppose to be.
I'm not sure if we're fulling that yet, as we intended or intend to.
I'm not sure if churches of 500 or 5000 are in relation to their size.
But I do think there are churches, both of 5,000 or 50 that are or can be, and that's the most important thing.

I may wonder what kind of mission God has for me, when I should ask what kind of me God wants for his mission.
