The law of the LORD is perfect,
reviving the soul.
Psalm 19:7
Who doesn't need their soul revived with life?
This psalm gave me a refreshed, simple, renewed appreciation for the Scriptures which I tend to need from time to time, especially when I study them so often.
I, as many, need to see the life giving nature of God's words.

I have a strong feeling that reading the scriptures imparts much more than just information (history, rules, theology, etc.) but that it somehow, in an essentially magical sense, can bypass the mind to infiltrate the soul and effect spiritual growth.
...at least, that's my working model for now.
Paul
"your working model;" I love how you don't trap yourself (HA).
I agree, the scriptures are definitely more then just info.
Magical is an interesting word - it kind of says, 'something I believe in but can't fully explain.'
In one sense, the scriptures are the story of God intersecting humunity through action, relationships, and the climactic gospel event - Jesus. And at another level, it is God speaking to us. That explains how often God's spirit reminds of God's words... usually when we need them.
What you call "not trapping" myself, I call being open to learn new and better ways of understanding how God speaks to us. :-)
a good approach
there can be a positive thing for not trapping yourself - so you can continue to grow in your knowledge and relationship of God, and the scriptures
- I like to try and stick with the pillars with the ability to move within some areas I can - must - continue to grow in; especially b/c often what I've thought was so important was really a cultural wave at the time (e.g. the way we do mission)
"mystery" of the gospel is a great word the scriptures use.
