I'm inspired by 77 year old Prof. Liviu Librescu - described as a family man who once did research for NASA - who courageously stood in front of the door of his university class to spare his students - if possible - from death. A man who survived the holocaust, many other troubles throughout his life... and then years later dies at the hands of an angry student trying to send a message to a culture he hates.
Letters about this teacher have come in... one was so profound. Writing to Librescu's wife, a student said that just before she jumped out of the window she turned back and saw her teacher still holding the door with all his strength (probably already shot) continuing to look with concern making sure the students were not harmed. She said this was the most courageous act she's ever seen in her life.
One student simply said, I think he saved my life.
Listening, I couldn't help me moved, and wondered what kind of courage I might have in that moment.
Who knows how many students this man saved by his heroic act of courage?
