Last Sunday our gathering took on a different feel. No music or musical worship.
A simple hello, reading of scripture, and prayer... and then onto our focus for the morning - INTERVIEW WITH BONO (from August 2006 Leadership Summit).
Here some key thoughts/quotes from the Interview (paraphrased):
How can the church NOT respond to the AIDS crisis if we hold true to Jesus' challenge of being a good neighbor (Luke 10:25-37) to our neighbors - across the street or globe.
If we believe this, then we can't leave the orphans in Africa untouched.
The world system before Christ was basically KARMA, what you put in you get out... until entered GRACE.
Celebrity is ridiculous. What makes a rock start better than a nurse. It upends God's order of things.
What do you with this thing called Celebrity if you can't use it for the good of the world around you.
I can't agree with gospel music b/c it doesn't always tell the truth about how I'm feeling. Sometimes I feel more like the Psalms - doubtful, angry, confused.
Some of the comments that came out during the response revolved around...
...Bono honestly admitting his need for grace
...the church partnering with a variety of organizations to serve the needs of our world
...the different pictures of God we express to the world (exclusively a judge or also loving father)
...a desire for the church to be more visible in action, not just proclamation
SEVERAL PEOPLE WANT TO SHOW THERE FRIENDS AND WOULD LIKE TO SET UP ANOTHER VIEWING.
IF ANY ONE'S INTERESTED IN ANOTHER VIEWING, EMAIL ME (dmanafo(at)hotmail(dot)com). WE'RE ALREADY LOOKING INTO MAKING IT HAPPEN WITHIN THE NEXT MONTH.

I'm so happy you showed this. I'll definitely be doing the same at one of our cafes.
I don't think we do enough to help the 'less fortunate' (more like 2 thirds of the world). Sometimes I struggle with how...we're so preoccupied with our own lives, and for good reason too...kids, church, neighbours, family, etc.
I guess there's no real excuse eh?
it was a huge challenge for us to hear his passion on the world's poor... I'll be also showing at the next gathering cafe
