I'm a child of an immigrant. My parents immigrated in the late 50's, got married in Canada, and built their lives here. It seemed to work really well. I come from European roots, and most at that time, I believe, we're similar.
New data shows that immigration in the last 10-20 years has not gone so smoothly.
I always felt Canada was better at multiculturalism than most countries. In a bad way we really don't know what Canadian is. In a good way, we're inclusive to our cultures - my parents were 'one' of those cultures.
After reading the article in the globe and mail, I have some questions:
Was is it easier for immigrants to make a life here and feel at home 40-50 years ago?
Is it possible that the cultures coming into Canada the last 2 decades are so diverse that the rules of the game don't work any more? (eg. recent immigration is diversely from China, India, Middle East, Latin Armerica, and more)
Are people coming in today wanting to create their life from back home here instead of integrate within Canadian culture, which might create more isolation?
Are Canadians scared of these new cultures?
I don't have the answers, but I'm thinking.
