I'm not into labels, and I'm not necessarily an Amish fan, but this morning, according to the newspaper, it's a good 'ish' to be, in my opinion.
The news reported the Amish community struck by tragedy (school girl shooting) is chosing to 'reach out to killer's family' and 'NOT to balance hurt with hate'. Of course there's some strange things about the Amish, but it was a nice reminder about how live out ones values and life choices; we all make decisions daily that either reflect or deflect the teachings of Jesus; when tough situations come around do we get caught up with justifying our reactions (this one was impossible to follow Jesus on) or do we have the faith to live the way of Jesus, believing it's best.
In other religious news (stumbled on this one):
the Pope is apperently close to a decision to remove a long standing teaching (not an official doctrine) that said infants dead before baptism don't go to heaven. The reason? Apparently he never believed in it, and one source says b/c many in countries where infant death rates are high turn to Islam which teaches stillborn babies go to paradise.
Good thing: that at that level of religious authority you can chose to lose something that you never really felt was important (biblically)
Question: was the motive of losing members to a religion that happens to make the situation easier influential in the decision.
(I found both stories this morning in the Montreal Gazette)

i'm adding comments regarding the changing of a doctrine (apparently not official) from the Pope, wondering, can you look back and discover something wasn't really biblical and just lose it (although I'm sure this wasn't a 1/2 day meeting). I guess so. the bigger questions is, who has the authority to do that.
a friend forwarded me more responses to this whole thing from the pope:
